Teacher Self-Perception of Distributed Leadership, Teacher Job Satisfaction, and Gender: A Correlational Associative Study

The purpose of this quantitative associative-correlational study was to determine if there is a correlation between teacher job satisfaction and distributed leadership and if that relationship is shared or different between genders. Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Gronn's (2002) and Spillane's et al. (2004) theories on distributed leadership served as the framework for this study. A sample was collected consisting of 123 high school teachers in the United States to determine if there was a correlation between teacher job satisfaction and teacher self-perception of distributed leadership by gender among high school teachers in the United States. The variables of interest were measured using the Teacher Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (TJSQ) and the Distributive Leadership Inventory (DLI) producing significant results for the RQ. For females, the result of the correlation was examined based on an alpha value of 0.05. A significant positive correlation was observed between TJSQ and DLI, with a correlation of 0.76, indicating a large effect size (p < 0.001, 95.00% CI = [0.63, 0.85]). This suggests that as TJSQ increases, DLI tends to increase. For males, the result of the correlation was examined based on an alpha value of 0.05. A significant positive correlation was observed between TJSQ and DLI, with a correlation of 0.81, indicating a large effect size (p < 0.001, 95.00% CI = [0.70, 0.88]). This suggests that as TJSQ increases, DLI tends to increase. The results of this study underscore the importance of administrators being aware that there is a relationship between distributed leadership and job satisfaction by both males and females.
