Women's Student Leadership Experiences: Understanding Leadership Identity Development
Alyssa Lowe
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southern Methodist University
Leadership development is a broadly discussed topic in industries across the globe. In education, administrative leadership has been explored at length, as has student leadership development. What is yet to be understood are the nuanced perspectives of leadership development for different student identities. This study explores women's student leadership development through on-campus involvement to better understand the ways in which female students develop their leadership across the myriad of campus engagement opportunities. As higher education student populations continue to diversify and involvement areas grow, this research highlights how women specifically develop their leadership and showcases the importance of relationships in building that leadership. Future research can delve deeper in understanding if relationships are a key supporting feature of leadership development in students with differing identities.
