Martin Cantu
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Arkansas State University
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a mariachi multicultural program influenced the students' formation of their cultural identities and schooling perceptions. The study was grounded on the cultural identity theoretical framework. Employing a qualitative narrative research design, the study was informed through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations. Four significant themes emerged from the data: cultural identity, cultural consciousness, social connectedness, and student engagement at school. The findings suggested that mariachi education influenced the participating students' cultural identity formations by fostering cultural awareness and social connections. Additionally, mariachi programs also positively influenced the students' academic standings, school attendance, and behaviors. The findings of the study highlighted the positive transformative influence of mariachi education on the students' overall educational experiences as well as their cultural identities and schooling perceptions. This study has important implications as it deals with the development of the students' cultural identities and schooling perceptions. The results in this study indicated that the students' academic journeys become more successful when they participate in courses culturally relevant to them. The students involved in these courses develop their cultural identities and improve their schooling perceptions. The results in this study could be utilized as a resource in middle schools and high schools to evaluate their music programs and the courses they currently offer that are culturally relevant to the student body.
