Preparing Teachers to Support Students' Social-Emotional Needs: A Qualitative Single Case Study on Social and Emotional Teacher Training
Joy Lin Crawford
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
This qualitative single case study examined how teacher training on social and emotional learning could better prepare teachers to support student's social and emotional needs in the classroom. The problem addressed in this study was the inconsistent quality of social and emotional training provided to teachers, resulting in ill-equipped teachers to manage students' social and emotional needs in the classroom. The purpose of the qualitative single case study was to explore teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of social and emotional teacher training through their personal experiences. The conceptual framework used as the foundation of this study was the concept of social and emotional learning, which was established by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning and is grounded in prevention science and developmental research. Data were collected by using in-person, one-on-one interviews and classroom observations. There were nine teacher participants, and their interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and reviewed by participants before thematic analysis was conducted. This study concluded that social and emotional teacher training must be created to give teachers more consistent training that includes real-world experiences, smaller groups, guidelines, and ways to support their own social and emotional needs. The findings also showed that the implementation of social and emotional programs should be done school-wide and be supported by all levels of administration. The recommendations for practice include increasing the amount of social and emotional training provided to teachers, incorporating real-world scenarios, supporting teachers' social and emotional needs, and school-wide implementation. Additionally, future research should study a larger group of participants from various schools throughout a larger district to validate the findings and provide a better understanding of the research results.
