Time Usage of Educational IT Software Services by Undergraduate Students
Jeffery W. Leigh
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capitol Technology University
Information Technology (IT) services have become popular at academic institutions worldwide enabling students as well as instructors to utilize their potential to meet the standard credit hour requirements. This dissertation comprised a quantitative study of the IT time usage by resident undergraduate students in Buffalo, New York, over a 15-week standard course semester. In the study, 93 participants completed a 12-question online survey over their spring 2023 semester asking about their time usage regarding IT services, their use of IT services to communicate with their instructors, and their use of in-person instruction time. The students were given certain options regarding the time range of IT services so that they could answer specific questions that were later added up to quantify their total use and identify the instances in which they resorted to IT time usage. After these data were compared to the standard credit hour requirements data, this study concluded that the students were spending more time utilizing IT services in their undergraduate courses compared to that mandated by their standard credit hour requirements.
