Exploring the Experiences of Africa International Students on Institutional Support Services in a Mid-Atlantic Community College
Chinwe Joycelyn Ihuoma
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
Many African international students see two-year colleges as a pathway to higher education in the United States. It is critical to better understand who these students are, what draws them to two-year colleges, what support services are available, and how their needs are met. As African international students contribute to more robust, diverse, and financially stable campuses in the United States and the number of African international students studying in American institutions continues to rise, it is vital to understand students' adjustments to life and study in a new country, specifically investigating their psychological, sociocultural, and academic needs that postsecondary institutions must be prepared to meet. Apart from that, there is a scarcity of empirical literature that explores the experiences of African international college students in the United States, particularly as it relates to their transition in foreign academic and social environments. Information of this nature can have significant consequences for the retention of many African international students in college and universities in the United States. The provision of culturally relevant and appropriate support services to these student populations is of great importance.
