Creative Experience in a Textbook: A Qualitative Content Analysis of the Fifth-Grade "Wonders" Literature Anthology
Cecilia Kim Yoon
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Kansas
In a time of rapid change and uncertainty, the skills that students must acquire are becoming more focused on creativity. Correspondingly, the development of students' creative competency should be addressed and implemented in curriculum. The purpose of the study is to examine how the content of a curriculum material, specifically an elementary textbook, engages with creative experience. Creative experience emerges from active and meaningful engagement and interactions between person and world, which are marked by open-endedness, nonlinearity, pluri-perspectivism, and future-orientation (Glaveanu, 2013; Glaveanu and Beghetto, 2021). Through qualitative content analysis, I examined the ways in which the elements of creative experience (Glaveanu, 2013; Glaveanu and Beghetto, 2021) are present in the content of the fifth-grade "Wonders" Literature Anthology published by McGraw-Hill Education (2020b). By closely and systematically analyzing the content of the textbook, this study attempted to further comprehend the topic of creative experience and how curriculum materials can be utilized to enhance creativity.
