Counselors' Perceptions of CBT's Influence on Motivations of Sexual Assault against Minor Victims

Cognitive behavioral therapy and other forms of rehabilitative programming are currently available for nearly all criminogenic needs. However, there is limited rehabilitative programming available for sexual offenders with minor victims. In order to develop effective programming within future research, the underlying motivations must be explored. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore how counselors perceive CBT influences adult males' motivations to sexually offend minors in California, U.S.A. The research takes a qualitative approach from the perspectives of qualified professionals who provide a counseling service to the offenders. The counseling professionals were given a questionnaire, participated in a focus group, and participated in a semi-structured interview. The research found that, although various factors may contribute to the offense, the primary driving factor is a faulty coping mechanism for serious, inadequately addressed issues. Thus, cognitive behavioral therapy improvement is necessary for effective rehabilitation. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
