Nurse Educators' Experiences with Caring Behaviors in the Online Course Room Environment
Katie Lee
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Nurse educators' experiences with ways in which they show caring behaviors in the online course room environment was the topic of this research study. Respect and empathy were investigated as these concepts were used in the caring definition. There are numerous online undergraduate nursing programs that are entirely online; thus, further research was needed to examine how caring is modeled as part of the learning process in online nursing academia. There was one central research question and three sub-questions in this research study: (1) How do nurse educators in undergraduate nursing programs describe their experiences with caring behaviors in the online course room environment? (1a) What specific behaviors do nurse educators utilize to help students feel cared for in the online course room environment? (1b) How do nurse educators describe their experiences in showing empathy in the online course room environment? (1c) How do nurse educators describe their experiences in showing respect in the online course room environment? A basic qualitative research methodology was chosen for this research study as it addressed the purpose to explore nurse educators' experiences with caring behaviors in the online course room environment. Purposeful sampling was the sampling strategy for this research study. Inclusion criteria for this research study included master's prepared nurse educators who taught in online undergraduate nursing programs. Additionally, they had to self-identify by utilizing caring behaviors in the online course room environment. The population for this research study consisted of eight nursing educators who taught in online associate and/or baccalaureate nursing programs from two different colleges/universities. The primary data collection method for this research study was audio-recorded semi-structured interviews via Zoomâ„¢. The method for data analysis was thematic analysis. When discussing participants' experiences with caring behaviors in the online course room environment, four main themes emerged: (a) caring behaviors in the online course room, (b) respect, (c) empathy, and (d) consequences of not utilizing caring behaviors. One recommendation for further research is that additional studies be done related to caring behaviors in the online course room environment that include a large and more diverse sample size. The study could be replicated using nurse educators who teach in online graduate programs throughout the U.S. Future quantitative and mixed method studies could be conducted to address this research problem and possibly provide more generalizable results.
