Assessing Professional Development and Training Needs of Instructors Moving from In-Person to Online-Only Instruction
Walter Stepp
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trident University International
This qualitative descriptive study was conducted to explore and describe the training and professional development needs of instructors moving from in-person to online-only instruction. The intent of the study was to encourage administrators to assess these needs and develop training and professional development programs that will meet need these needs. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools moved to an online-only format. Instructors felt unprepared and expressed concerns regarding maintaining a high level of quality instruction (Dong, 2021; Kilgour et al., 2019). Previous studies did not address training issues, although some identified areas of difficulty (Chang & Fang, 2020), types of e-learning, employing various technologies (Tamm, 2021), and barriers to using instructional technologies (Baran et al., 2011; Kafyulilo et al., 2016). The study identified gaps in the training and professional development of instructors and developed strategies for identifying and meeting their training needs. These strategies will increase the quality of online instruction and enable instructors to use new technologies and strategies in the classroom. The results should benefit faculty, administrators, and students. Eight participants, with experience teaching in-person and online-only classes, were interviewed, using a list of guided questions. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The study found six themes, five of which identify and describe training issues. The sixth describes areas of concern regarding faculty-administrator interactions and issues that might affect job satisfaction and staff turnover. The results were used to create an assessment tool to identify and assess training needs and to develop a training program to meet the specific needs of an institution. The recommendation is that the assessment be faculty-centered, to ensure the training program reflects their needs.
