Assisting Returning Students through Intentional Support Following the Pandemic
Katy J. Berner-Wallen
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, State University of New York at Buffalo
The 2020 school shutdowns caused by COVID-19 required schools around the country to reevaluate how to best support student learning upon a student's return to the classroom. Research associated with disaster learning and transitional/integrated programs indicated that reconnecting a student to the classroom following a disruption requires an intentional and ongoing avenue of support and communication. Using an integrated research approach, this project identified how a school can build relationships and foster resiliency, as demonstrated through academic improvement and connection to the school community, for students who experienced disrupted learning caused by the pandemic.
