Supporting Single Mother Students with On-Campus Childcare Centers: A Cross-Institutional Program Evaluation
Fathia Richardson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New Jersey City University
There are nearly 1.7 million single-mother students who make up a substantial portion of the undergraduate student population. Only 8% of single-mother students graduate with a degree or certificate within 6 years of enrollment. There are multiple factors identified in the literature that contribute to low success and persistence rates. Factors such as poverty, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) work requirements, lack of institutional support, childcare issues, and the competing roles of mother and student have impacted the success of single-mother students. Additionally, the number of on-campus childcare centers has declined over the last decade, of which less than 5% meet the current childcare demands. Quality, affordable, and flexible on-campus childcare has been identified as a crucial support for single-mother students. A program evaluation of on-campus childcare centers was done to identify barriers, challenges, and creative solutions to support single-mother students to persist in community college. Childcare center directors and coordinators from seven on-campus childcare centers from five different U.S. states were interviewed. Program evaluation topics included racial demographics of single-mother students served by the centers; marketing strategies to attract diverse single-mother students; how centers support single-mother students; barriers encountered while trying to support single-mother students; implementation strategies when trying to provide quality, affordable, and flexible care; the role on-campus childcare center directors play in single-mother students' success; and how the childcare center responded to single-mother students during the pandemic. Findings, resources such as an on-campus childcare one pager, a sample blog post and sample social media posts, as well as recommendations are shared.
