Ecological Influences on Youth Violence and Delinquency in Urban Communities
Devonnae Grasty
ProQuest LLC, D.Soc.Sc. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The number of incarcerated American citizens has increased significantly, including juvenile delinquents, most of them coming from low-income neighborhoods (Scommegna, 2012). The youth usually have unstable homes, inadequate educational systems, and environments where poverty isn't a choice but a lifestyle. This study aimed to explore in-depth experiences of how various biopsychological (ecological) factors influence youth delinquency. The study used a mixed methods approach with a dominant qualitative focus. Data were analyzed using Bronfenbrenner's (1979) ecological systems theory, with the five systems of microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. Close relationships with family, community, and school shape interpersonal relationships and development within youth (Rice et al., 2017). In addition, research has shown how a child's development is affected by ecological influences (if negative) that prompt the youth to become a delinquent. The results of this study show a correlation between youth displaying delinquent behavior and the region where one comes from. The study also shows how becoming educated on family systems, the environment, and community can support and help a delinquent child. On the contrary, neglect from the family system, community, and environment could cause a decline in the child's well-being. Even though some youth find a way out, many end up in the endless cycle of poverty and incarceration. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
