ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The purpose of this qualitative case study aimed to identify and describe the use of succession planning found in an educational environment, and the perceptions of administrators and teachers regarding its use. Succession planning was said to be a systematic process to identify, develop, and grow individuals for greater responsibility in the organization and develop leadership capacity. Participants in the study included forty individuals from a large district in North Texas Region 10. The research conducted 11 interviews via face-to-face or phone conference to gain an understanding of the perceptions at the district, administrator, and teacher levels. The researcher transcribed the data from these interviews using Microsoft Word, analyzed the data, and identified five themes. The findings suggested that the district valued growing individuals from within the district and had an implemented plan. However, communication from the district was lacking regarding teacher's understanding of the offerings and personal application to future leadership roles. Implications for this study indicate districts should consider a structured plan that is well-thought-out for employees at all levels, easily accessible, and well communicated to all employees.
