A Phenomenological Study of School District Stakeholders' Perceptions of School Safety after Changes to School District Safety Programs
Crystal L. Wilkinson Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
Responding to an identified need for more research around the effectiveness or consequences of school safety plans (Croft et al., 2019) and the finding that parents and children often felt unsafe on school campuses (Jones, 2018), the central purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of school district stakeholders regarding one Southeast Texas school district's safety program. Stakeholders (participants) for this study included people residing within the boundaries of the school district, parents of current students, and staff of that district, and this investigation sought to determine whether they were comfortable with the plan in place at those schools. More specifically, this study interviewed those stakeholders in order to explore and explain their perceptions of the school's ability to respond to certain emergency situations after a presentation on the implementation of changes in the district safety programs. Their responses in the interview sessions showed that a large percentage of the stakeholders perceived the implemented changes positively following the presentation, and they reported feeling more at ease with the level of training that staff and students had been provided to respond in emergency situations.
