Exploring Low-Cost Recruitment Tools and Their Perceived Effectiveness for Increasing International Student
Melissa A. Rodriguez
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study is to identify recruitment tools, which may effectively increase international student enrollment at a public, state-assisted university in Texas that does not actively recruit internationally through international travel or dedicated recruitment plans structured for international students. The research questions that guided this study included how institutions actively attract and recruit international students, how does relationship marketing influence international student enrollment, how do institutions provide a positive experience on the college campus to international students, and what recommendations may increase international student enrollment and retention. Eight higher education professionals responsible for international recruitment at their respective institutions participated in the study by sharing experiences recruiting international students before and during the current COVID-19 pandemic. The findings suggest that several factors, including recruitment planning and strategies, may consider various programming to explore low-cost recruitment and enrollment management tools. One opportunity to explore is the reevaluation, or implementation, of alumni and current student programs to encourage word-of-mouth recruitment.
