Educator Perspectives on the Exclusionary Placements of Students with Disabilities
Molly S. Lubbock
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This study was designed to explore educators' perceptions regarding exclusionary practices of students with disabilities by public school teachers and administrators. Additionally, the study investigated possible alternatives and interventions to exclusionary arrangements. Research questions included general education and special education teachers' perceptions of the effectiveness of "out of placement" education of students with disabilities. It also explored administrators' perceptions of the efficacy of "out of placement" education of students with disabilities. This study also investigated teachers' and administrators' perceptions of possible changes needed to gain academic and behavioral progress regarding students placed out of the classroom due to discipline. This study included five administrators who have made discipline determinations of students with disabilities, five secondary general education teachers teaching students with disabilities, and five secondary special educators. Data were gathered using four separate instruments, including a Likert scale survey for all participants and three separate interview questionnaires for the identified study participants. Results of this study included a need for teacher training in disabilities and classroom management, services to assist students academically and behaviorally while in exclusionary placements, and the implementation of discipline programs to assist in campus discipline management.
