Parent Engagement in the Catholic Elementary School: A Study of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis
Amy Schroff; Sharon Lenger
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
This report describes a problem based learning project examining the roles and responsibilities of teachers in building parent engagement, the training elementary teachers within the Archdiocese of St. Louis have had regarding these roles and responsibilities and the perceived adequacy of the training they have received regarding these roles and responsibilities. Current research suggests a gap between the understanding of the roles of teachers in parent engagement and their training in fulfilling those roles. The project team was able to identify best practices in parent engagement and how parent engagement impacts the elementary learning environment. The project team identified the leading parent engagement model as Dr. Joyce Epstein's framework containing six types of parent engagement and partnership: parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision-making, and collaborating with the community (Epstein et al., 2019). The project team found that instruction for educators on effective parent engagement in practice appears to be inadequate and that further research in this area could potentially impact the Catholic elementary schools within the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The team used the six types of involvement in the Epstein framework in developing an elementary teacher survey to identify the nature and perceived adequacy of training in parent engagement Catholic elementary teachers had in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The project team reviewed the data from the completed surveys and analyzed the results for key findings and emerging trends. The project team offered recommendations based on the lessons learned and key findings through analysis of survey data from the elementary teachers within the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
