The Engagement and Academic Success of Latinas with Dependents in Community Colleges
Ronald Cropper
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
As the Latino population continues to rise, so does the need for education among Latinas with dependents within the community. Previous researchers have shown that Latinas have low college completion rates, which decreases their access to a better economic future (housing, health, living conditions). Thus, there is a pressing need to increase the academic success of Latinas with dependents on community college campuses. The purpose of this ex post facto study was to investigate how Latina students were engaged in relation to certain selected demographic characteristics and counseling services while enrolled at community college campuses. Kuh's Theory of Student Engagement undergirded this study. The independent variables in this study were selected demographic characteristics (English as a second language, marital status, enrollment status, first-generation status, and college urbanicity) and counseling services (academic advising and planning, career counseling, job placement assistance, financial assistance, face-to-face tutoring, and online tutoring). Selected demographics are the personal factors/determinants that may influence the intent to persist in completing college among Latina community college students. Counseling services, on the other hand, are the support services that played a vital role in Latina community college students' successful completion of a degree program. The dependent variables in the study were the five Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) benchmarks and academic success (GPA). Repeated measure ANOVA, three-way ANOVA, and MANOVA analyses examined differences between the independent variables and student engagement. Multinomial logistic regression analysis assessed the prediction of student academic success. This study contributes to the body of literature on the engagement and academic success of Latina community college students. Finally, the major findings in this study, along with the recommendations for professional practices and further research, are offered.
