Community College Alumni Giving Behaviors at a Large Mid-Western Community College: A Quantitative Study
Franceska Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morgan State University
For college leaders, especially presidents and advancement officers, fundraising has become an integral part of the leadership experience. Fundraising is a skill that is expected for top-level college leaders. For public community colleges, keeping tuition costs low necessitates a change in the basic funding model to include a more significant portion from private donations while continuing to seek donations that fund scholarships and build the endowments of their foundations. There is a large body of literature related to giving behaviors, but literature related to community college giving is limited. To develop comprehensive fundraising programs that include alumni, community college leaders will need to understand more than theories that address motivation to give and how engagement through the student experience and alumni participation impact giving for community college alumni. The purpose of this quantitative study was to use social exchange theory to explore the giving behavior of community college alumni by using selected demographic variables such as age, gender, student engagement, and alumni engagement. The researcher was in the effect of age, gender, student engagement, and alumni engagement on alumni giving behavior. Ex post facto survey data were in this study from one large-sized midwestern community college. The results of this study suggest that Black or African American alumni are twice as likely to contribute as White alumni. In addition, student participation and satisfaction make a significant difference in alumni giving behavior. Finally, scholarships and transferring to a four-year institution increase the likelihood that community college alumni will contribute to their alma mater.
