A Sense of Belonging for Jewish College Students
Sara Fredman Aeder
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New York University
The purpose of this research is to explore how Jewish students experience achieving a sense of belonging on campus. This research is important for understanding the experiences and factors that affect this group of students and might lead to suggestions for how Jews may achieve a healthy sense of belonging and avoid alienation, which might affect their success in college. Success may encompass many issues such as class passing rates, graduation rates, and student mental health. This community is tied to a specific religious tradition and culture and is often set apart from mainstream college life because of religious practices, such as maintaining a kosher diet or abstaining from certain sexual behaviors, or because of perceived bias. Jewish students' reported instances of bias on campus and instances of antisemitism are increasingly prevalent. By identifying and comparing the experiences of Jewish students, we may discover how to make college less alienating for them.
