A Preliminary Study: Factors That Influence Elementary School Principals' Assignment of Roles to Their Elementary School Counselors

The American School Counselors Association National Model (ASCANM), developed by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA), serves as the framework that governs the roles of all school counselors. In particular, the ASCANM provides guidelines that school counselors should follow to ensure they perform in the counseling roles that enhance students' overall success. Although most states endorse the ASCANM, many school districts and their elementary school principals assign varying roles to their school counselors (Erford, 2015). Given that elementary school principals are primarily responsible for assigning roles to their respective school counselors, it is important that elementary school principals are knowledgeable of the ASCANM. As a result of elementary school principals being knowledgeable of the ASCANM, roles they assign to their school counselors are often aligned with the ASCANM (Bailey, 2012). According to Bailey (2012), Erford (2015), and Rose (2019), elementary school principals who serve at Recognized American School Counselor Association National Model Program (RAMP) schools are more likely to assign roles to their respective school counselors that are aligned with the ASCANM. This research study explored the following: (1) factors that influence the roles elementary school principals assign to their school counselors; (2) principals' knowledge of the ASCANM; and (3) a determination if there is a difference between elementary school principals who serve at RAMP- and non-RAMP schools, and the type of roles they assign to their school counselors.
