Critical Review of Sophomore Athletes' Persistence to Improve Retention and Overall Organizational Performance
Gloria M. Arcia
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Barry University
For this qualitative study, I employed performance gap analysis and root cause analysis on a university via semi-structured interviews that included member checking follow-ups with 10 university stakeholders and three focus groups to: (1) identify the performance gap; (2) hone in on the performance gap and identify the root causes; and (3) identify the aim and possible solution(s). The fishbone root cause analysis diagram was used to guide efforts to expose issues with reporting, policies/procedures, and people-related problems that can inform reforms within the organization. The findings revealed meaningful themes that are crucial in addressing the performance gap in the iCARE Early Alert System as well as its organizational process across three thematic categories: perceptions of the stakeholders, perceptions of the faculty members, and group perceptions and experiences. The findings support the early alert preventative intervention as it was desired by staff implementing the intervention and the students taking writing workshops and resulted in noticeable improvement in student college writing according to three faculty raters.
