Effects of a Physical Fitness Intervention Program on Fifth Grade Students
Mark A. Banks
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
It is estimated that less than 20% of young people worldwide are receiving the recommended 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per day (Riley, Lubans, Holmes, & Morgan, 2014). Delaware and many other states around the country use FITNESSGRAM to assess students' overall physical fitness. The FITNESSGRAM® is a physical fitness assessment that uses criterion-referenced standards to evaluate students' physical fitness levels (The Cooper Institute, 2006). At Lord Baltimore Elementary School (LBES) in Ocean View, Delaware, FITNESSGRAM results have shown that not all students are able to achieve the healthy fitness zone (HFZ), the areas assessed by the FITNESSGRAM. The purpose of this dissertation project was to create a practical method of increasing physical activity levels during the school day, as well as investigate the effects of a fitness intervention on LBES fifth-grade students' performances on the FITNESSGRAM Fitness Assessment. The FITNESSGRAM Fitness Assessment pre-test was performed by all 5th-grade students (n = 113) in September of 2021. Upon completion of the pre-test, a video fitness intervention was conducted with all 5th-grade students at LBES. Intervention videos consisted of daily five minute workout videos led by the LBES physical education teacher. At the conclusion of the fitness intervention, students performed the FITNESSGRAM Fitness Assessment post-test in December 2021, using the same procedures as they had in the pre-test. FITNESSGRAM post-test data showed increases in combined overall scores in every category that was assessed. In addition, the percentage of students achieving the HFZ also increased in each fitness category that was assessed.
