Kimberly Wilson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trident University International
This qualitative descriptive study explored nursing faculty perceptions and experiences using vSim for Nursing computer-based virtual simulation. The research questions guiding this study were: 1) What are nurse educators' perceptions and experiences utilizing vSim for Nursing computer-based virtual simulation? 2) What are the best practices nurse educators have discovered using vSim for Nursing computer-based virtual simulation? 3) What problems were encountered in the implementation phase and the use of vSim for Nursing computer-based virtual simulation, and how were these problems addressed? The study used data obtained through email interviews with a subset of 17 nursing faculty participants from a community college. The theoretical foundation for this study was constructivism theory. The findings from this study revealed the following themes student benefits, perceived advantages, faculty professional development, technology support, and perceived disadvantages. With the results from this study, associate degree nurse educators can make informed decisions regarding the use and best practices of computer-based virtual simulation. In addition, nurse educators can better understand the problems they may face and possible solutions when implementing computer-based virtual simulation in the curriculum. Having this knowledge could encourage a change in approach for nurse educators utilizing this pedagogy. Also, how nursing faculty perceive this type of pedagogy may serve as a source of reflection and growth for nurse educators, thus improving or enhancing their teaching practice.
