Implementation of an Online Orientation Process for Federal Work-Study
Denise Scalzo
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program was established under the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964 to place low-income students with part-time employment to offset some educational expenses. In 1965, it was moved by President Lyndon B. Johnson to the Higher Education Act of 1965. The program was originally established as a job development program to assist students in gaining career readiness skills. The research focused on Manhattan College's Federal Work-Study Program. The program at Manhattan College was established in 1965 and has benefited many students in helping pay educational expenses. However, there are no formal processes for onboarding work-study students at Manhattan College. Theoretical research concluded that creating an online orientation program would support the effective hiring, onboarding, and career development for program participants. An orientation portal was designed based on a literature review, Federal Work-Study guidelines, model programs, and a student survey.
