Is There a Difference in the Levels of Ascription to Scientism among Seniors Pursuing Degrees at Christian Colleges or Universities Based on Major?
Mitchell J. Jaeger
ProQuest LLC, D.Phil. Dissertation, Columbia International University
Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that studies the nature of knowledge (Hetherington, 2012; Moreland & Craig, 2017; Pritchard, 2014). Epistemology is central to the practice of research and education (Spears, 2003). The epistemological position that holds science as the best or only way of acquiring knowledge is known as scientism (Moreland, 2018; Moreland & Craig, 2017; Principe, 2015). While science and the Christian faith rightfully practiced interact well and are complementary of each other (Moreland, 1994), scientism is incompatible with and detrimental to Christianity (Bloom, 2015; Moreland, 2018; Moreland & Craig, 2017). This study explored the level to which scientism was adopted among students at Christian colleges and universities. Specifically, it asked the following question: Is there a statistically significant difference in the levels of ascription to scientism among seniors pursuing degrees at Christian colleges or universities based on major? An instrument was developed to measure the level of ascription to scientism. A quantitative approach was used to gather data, and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was utilized to examine if the mean scientism scores of any major were significantly different from other majors' means. It was found that the mean scientism scores of science majors were significantly higher than the mean scientism scores of biblical studies majors. Science majors also scored significantly higher than biblical studies majors on three of four tenets of scientism. The results of this study could be used to assist academic administrators and governing board members to work strategically against ideas that are incompatible with Christianity within their respective institutions.
