The Influence of Knowledge Management on Organizational Innovation Mediated by Organizational Learning: A Quantitative Study

As a driving factor in achieving firm sustainability and competitiveness, organizational innovation has become a topic of interest. To gain a deeper understanding of how organizational innovation might be influenced by knowledge management and organizational learning, the current study researched to what degree organizational learning mediates the relationship between knowledge management and organizational innovation among engineering professionals in U.S. consulting firms. The study examined 70 respondents via survey questionnaire to collect data about the perceptions of the acquisition, dissemination, and responsiveness to knowledge as aiding in organizational innovation activity in U.S. consulting firms. In testing the theory of organizational creativity and innovation through a quantitative methodology approach, the preliminary results of the research show that although the mediator variable organization learning did not mediate the relationship between the independent variable knowledge management and the dependent variable organization innovation, there is, however a direct and statistically significant relationship between knowledge management and organizational innovation. Simple mediation analysis tested the strength of a relationship between all variables. The data also indicates that the respondents disagree that organizational learning influences the relationship between knowledge management and organizational innovation. While the current study identifies knowledge management as a promoter of organizational innovation, recommendations for future studies propose exploring additional organizational elements to identify antecedents of organizational innovation drivers. The conclusion can be drawn that knowledge management is a strategic resource that could contribute to sustainable organizational innovation efforts, present, and future.
