Business Strategies of Community College Leaders in North Texas to Maintain Growth: An Exploratory Case Study
TaMika Fuller
ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, University of Phoenix
Understanding economic sustainability is vital to the survivability of a community college. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore business strategies educational leaders use to satisfy diverse stakeholders' expectations to ensure economic sustainability in community colleges in North Texas. The data sources included semi-structured one-on-one interviews with 15 educational leaders, a semi-structured interview with a focus group of 6 faculty, and a review of the company website. Five themes emerged through thematic analysis, including (a) stakeholders expect quality education, (b) stakeholders expect collaboration with community college educational leaders, (c) stakeholders expect workforce-ready students, (d) educational leaders collaborate inside and outside of the school, and (e) educational leaders plan with graduation and future employment in mind. The study's findings contribute to the literature and economic sustainability in colleges by providing insight into the role educational leaders play in identifying strategies used to satisfy stakeholders' needs. A key recommendation born of this study was to incorporate the Balanced Scorecard, or another sustainability tracking mechanism, to track sustainability practices in the community college. Educational leaders at community colleges may utilize these findings to incorporate sustainability practices and improve the quality of education for their students.
