ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
A qualitative study was performed to evaluate the experiences and perceptions of Hispanic senior adults with health literacy while accessing the healthcare system. Research has shown that Hispanic Americans experience health inequalities due to low health literacy. Patients with low health literacy have trouble following medical directions and preventing chronic diseases. Patients with insufficient knowledge in health literacy cannot prevent chronic diseases and adhere to medical directions. Hispanic Americans have health inequalities due to low health literacy. The current literature exposed a gap specifically regarding Hispanic senior adults with health literacy while accessing the healthcare system and indicated a need for tailor-made services for this minority population. The methodology used in this investigation was generic qualitative research. A semi-structured face-to-face interview was used in this study to gather information from a nonprobability, purposive sampling of 16 Hispanic senior adults ranging in age from 55 to 85. The population was senior adults who lived in the state of Florida. The interviews took place in English or Spanish, depending on the participant's preference. The results indicated that Hispanic senior adults face language and communication barriers, lack of knowledge and understanding, financial barriers, fear and frustration, and technology issues while accessing healthcare services. The study had positive outcomes with the participants using their family support system to navigate the healthcare system and requesting translators when visiting healthcare professional offices. The ecological theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The study finding indicated the need for future studies using the ecological systems theory for future theoretical frameworks, creating cultural support and training systems for this minority ethnic community.
