Predicting Special Education Teachers' Work Experience: The Role Pre-Screening Tools May Play
Stefanie Parrish
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Kansas
What is the correlation between pre-screening tools and teaching experiences in the special education setting? Are pre-screening tools, used by school district throughout the country, able to predict an applicant's teaching experience? This study seeks to find the answers to these two research questions. In this qualitative study, twenty special education teachers, who completed an online pre-screening tool, are interviewed about their work experience. Half of the study's participants scored 1.5 standard deviations to the right of the average score on the pre-screening tool. The second half of the study's participants scored 1.5 standard deviations to the left of the average pre-screening tool score. The data collected from the interviews is analyzed and four emerging themes present themselves in this study. The reoccurring themes in this study included the increase of student behavior issues, lack of time to perform job requirements, rise in job demands and lack of administrative support. Though two different groups of participants, those mentioned above, were interviewed for the study the results were the same. There is no significant relationship between a teaching candidate's pre-screening tool score and his/her teaching experience. Pre-screening tools, according to the data presented in this study, cannot predict the experiences of a special education teacher. There is no correlation between the pre-screening tool score and the experience of the special education teacher.
