Quantitative Study of School Culture and Climate in Selected Public Secondary Schools in Alabama's River Region: Implications for School Administrators
Aurelio De'Andre Harrison
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Alabama State University
This study aims to describe the culture and climate of selected middle and high schools in Alabama's River Region. Teachers and administrators from nine middle and eleven high schools in the four-county region of Central Alabama completed two electronic surveys: (a) the School Culture Survey (SCS) developed by Steve Gruenert and Jerry Valentine and (b) the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaires (OCDQ-RM/OCDQ-RS) developed by Wayne K. Hoy. The latter survey was previously used to measure climate in elementary schools and adapted to assess the climate specifically in middle and high schools. The OCDQ-RM was administered to middle school stakeholders, and the OCDQ-RS was administered to high school stakeholders. The results are based on responses to the SCS from 100 middle school stakeholders and 95 responses to the OCDQ-RM. High school stakeholders contributed 103 responses to the SCS and 100 responses to the OCDQ-RS. The survey results were analyzed using SPSS to run descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings indicate there is not a statistically significant difference in the perception of school climate and culture between middle and high school stakeholders. The findings revealed that the climate in participating middle schools is more collaborative, and therefore have a more open climate than high schools in this region. After compiling the analytics, the researcher reported the findings and recommended that school leaders employ strategies to increase the trust levels between teachers and administration. Additionally, the researcher recommended that future studies include a mixed-method design to more adequately capture the nuances of stakeholders' perceptions on culture and climate.
