The Challenges of Recruiting High-Quality Teachers in the Core Subject and Special Education Areas: A Mixed-Data Needs Analysis
Azineth M. Buan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
This convergent parallel mixed-methods study examined the factors affecting teacher recruitment and retention, and explored teachers' and administrators' perceptions about the obstacles and opportunities they encounter during the hiring process. The researcher used a purposeful convenience sampling method in recruiting participants; a total of 49 participants, comprised of 38 teachers, and 11 administrators, completed the online survey in Qualtrics. Quantitative data was analyzed using Minitab and MAXQDA was used for qualitative data. The study's findings led the researcher to conclude that while many respondents value their passion for teaching and love their students, economic concerns are paramount in their career decisions, and must be addressed if districts and schools wish to recruit and retain quality teachers.
