The Relationship of the College Assistance Migrant Program Housing Accommodations on Migrant Students' Final GPA and Degree Attainment at One Public South Texas University
Nancy Dominguez
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Tarleton State University
The purpose of this study was to examine if types of housing accommodations impacted grade point average and degree attainment for incoming migrant freshman students participating in a College Assistance Migrant Program at a public, four-year university in south Texas. For the purposes of this study, housing accommodations refers to students living on campus as residents or residing off-campus and considered commuters to campus. The participants included over 450 migrant students who were enrolled as full-time freshmen during the fall semesters from 2012 to 2019 at this postsecondary institution. The participants included 394 migrant students who lived off-campus as commuters and 105 migrant students who lived on-campus as residents. An analysis of variance was used to compare housing accommodations to grade point average. The researcher also used logistic regression to analyze the relationship between housing accommodations and degree attainment. A key finding from this research study suggests that there was no statistically significant different in total GPA between commuter and residential students, and there is no dependent relationship between housing type and total GPA for migrant college students. Another key finding was housing type did not predict degree attainment. Keywords: migrant, housing accommodations, degree attainment, grade point average.
