Exploring the Transfer Student Capital-Building Experiences of Lateral Transfer Students
Diane C. Perez
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
This study examined the transfer student capital-building experiences of nine students who transferred to the research site from other 4-year institutions. A narrative qualitative approach was used to guide the development of the study. Each participant was interviewed twice, using a semi-structured interview protocol to capture participants' stories in greater detail. Interview transcript analysis yielded four themes and various subthemes related to the important relationships in participants' lives, the emotional burdens they overcame throughout the transfer process, the varying levels of institutional support they encountered, and the navigational skills they built in their journeys. The Transfer Student Capital framework was applied to these themes to develop four major findings. Three findings related directly to the ways participants acquired and used transfer student capital: by engaging in meaningful relationships during the transfer process, by prioritizing campus engagement and community building, and by navigating institutional systems and challenges. The fourth finding articulated a model that ties the other findings together, anchoring self-efficacy development as a function of transfer student capital acquisition over time. These findings were then contextualized within current research on transfer student success and suggestions for practice and future research were proposed.
