Ariassa Anna Wilson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how community college women's basketball coaches use their leadership abilities to develop different types of capital in their Black women college athletes on the West Coast of the United States. This study used the Community Cultural Wealth model and Psychological Capital framework as the theoretical foundations. This study used two research questions that guided the data collection on how coaches describe their leadership ability to enhance community cultural wealth and how coaches describe how they use their leadership abilities to develop psychological capital in Black women college athletes. Using a convenience sampling strategy, 17 women's community college basketball coaches participated in the study. Twelve coaches participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews, and 10 coaches participated in two five-person focus groups. Data were analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis approach to create categories, codes, and themes. Ten themes surfaced around the coach-athlete relationship, cultural awareness, the psychological well-being of Black women college athletes, and coaches' leadership styles. The researcher concluded that coaches' leadership style, self-awareness, and attention to athletes' overall well-being influence their ability to enhance and develop capital in their Black women college athletes through their behaviors, communication, and team culture.
