Identifying the Leadership Conditions for Sustainable College and Career Pathways: Leadership Attributes of Linked Learning Principals
Renee Marie Shipman

Linked Learning is a college and career readiness reform designed to engage students in a rigorous curriculum to prepare for all post-secondary options. School districts nationwide have implemented Linked Learning in high schools with various levels of fidelity to the Linked Learning model. Schools that have achieved Linked Learning certification have consistently demonstrated positive student achievement outcomes. Successful college and career reforms are often dependent on the principal's leadership. Therefore, it is critical to understand the leadership attributes of principals who lead Linked Learning certified schools. This mixed method case study focused on the leadership attributes of six principals leading Linked Learning certified pathways in one PreK-12 school district. The qualitative data consisted of six open-ended interviews with high school principals, while the quantitative data was a 30-question survey deployed to pathway leadership team members. The case study hypothesizes that if high school principals practice the leadership attributes found in the distributive leadership and leadership efficacy theoretical frameworks within the Linked Learning context, they will be more likely to sustain certified pathways at their schools. The study's findings suggest that the principals utilized five practices within the frameworks as part of their leadership attributes. The practices include relational trust, shared leadership, collective efficacy, vision and goal setting, and self-efficacy. The implications of these findings suggest that as school districts continue to expand the college and career readiness reforms, such as Linked Learning, cultivating these leadership attributes within their current principals and leadership development programs will be essential for sustained implementation.
