Reginald De'Angelo Summerville
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Freed-Hardeman University
This study investigated educational disparities among Black/African American and White/Caucasian high school students, with a focus on their perceptions of educational opportunities and factors contributing to disparities. Utilizing qualitative research methods, this study explored students' perspectives on academic success, influencing factors, barriers, necessary resources, and challenges. Findings highlight the significance of equitable access to resources and opportunities for both racial groups. Competitive programs, mentorship, and support mechanisms emerge as crucial for reducing disparities. Perceptions also indicated that addressing biases within educational institutions and fostering equitable expectations among educators are essential. Implications for stakeholders and policymakers underscore the need for collaborative efforts to promote equity and equal opportunities among Black/African American and White/Caucasian students. This research serves as a call to action, challenging the status quo and advancing a future where all students can access quality education by closing achievement and opportunity gaps.
