Teacher Recruitment: A Strategic Pathway to Teaching in a Southeast Texas School District
Paula Klapesky
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The nation is facing a crisis with the current teacher shortage and rapidly decreasing number of individuals choosing teaching as a profession. Texas has the largest public school teacher workforce in the nation. In nearly ten years in Texas, from the 2012-2013 to the 2021-2022 school years, the number of individuals obtaining a degree in education decreased 12% while the number of individuals pursuing Alternative Certification increased from 85,000 to 125,000. Research is plentiful indicating student achievement is impacted by the preparation, or lack thereof, a teacher receives and years of teaching experience. This dissertation in practice (DiP) relied on a qualitative approach to interview key personnel, using purposive sampling, in five Houston-area school districts to illuminate the strategies to address this dilemma. The data generated several themes of programming which were then presented to a focus group of administrators in the Conroe ISD school district. Findings recommended a vast array of programs and strategies the focus group supported to be considered for the Conroe ISD. A prioritized list was developed serving as the draft of a strategic plan the district could adopt. A strategic pathway to recommend an action plan to benefit school districts facing teacher shortages serves as a viable solution to this national crisis.
