Fabien McGill
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, South Carolina State University
The events that came to pass within the past few years have created quite a stir within the educational community. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there was a shift from brick & mortar to virtual learning, which many academic experts and stakeholders needed to prepare for. Due to the major shutdowns, there have been many concerns about learning loss which this study may be able to expose. This study aimed to identify whether academic achievement was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in elementary-school students. The research sought to analyze whether the students' academic achievement levels differed significantly by; gender, male and female students, & race; Black/African American and White students. The study's sample consisted of third-grade students from 570 elementary schools in South Carolina, where the researcher collected the data from the state-reported standardized testing scores. Learning loss became evident when students were not exposed to consistent educational settings. The pandemic has had a negative impact on the academic achievement of all students. Findings from this study indicate that educational experts and the government must commit their energy to help deal with the academic loss experienced during the pandemic.
