The Stories of Space and Student Sense of Belonging
Benjamin Christopher Rieth
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New England College
A student's sense of belonging can affect many aspects of their achievements, and their academic and social life (Freeman et al., 2007; Hausman et al., 2007; Hoffman et al., 2002; Strayhorn, 2012). Vaccaro and Newman (2022) contended only by understanding the process of belonging development, one can develop a sense of being as students navigate welcoming and unwelcoming campus environments. Moreover, belonging influences many aspects of a student's life on campus, which is why it is imperative to understand the characteristics that make a space where students belong. This study was designed to explore students and the spaces they inhabit where they feel they belong. By completing this study, the goal was to better understand sense of belonging and the contributing factors creating a sense of belonging to a space on campus. Rieth asked students to describe the space to which they feel they have a sense of belonging. This study consisted of students describing their space, such as what the space looks like, feels like, sounds like, what is in the space, and who helps create those spaces. Rieth used an Indigenous paradigm and research studies to uncover and develop a theory called the five Rs of student sense of belonging and space.
