Grenetta Gunn Turner
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
School counselors advocate for students' academic, social, and emotional needs. School counselors are at the forefront of addressing students' mental health needs. This study sought to investigate the types of mental health services available in high schools and explore school counselors' awareness of the impact these services have on gifted students. The literature on gifted high school students' mental health reviews specific mental health disorders and multiple theories, programs, and implemented services to address mental health problems in schools. School counselors' perceptions of school-based mental health services (SBMHS) are crucial as they are responsible for students' social-emotional development in the school setting. A phenomenological qualitative approach examined school counselors' experiences with (SBMHS) and gifted students. Twelve school counselors responded to a qualitative survey of 14 open-ended questions to examine their awareness of SBMHS, the benefits to gifted students, and which services school counselors' implemented most frequently with gifted students. Results indicated that the same access to SBMHS is available to both gifted students and their non-gifted peers. However, gifted students are frequently referred to counseling services. School counselors reported improved academics and behavior when students participated in SBMHS. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
