Yifan Sun
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
In the wake of post-COVID-era anti-Asian hate, Asian American employees at a two-year community and technical college have been grappling with mental health challenges while steadfastly carrying out their responsibilities. The purpose of this study was help create a supportive system so Asian American employees could achieve their professional goals and personal well-being. Participants in Cycle 1 shared specific challenges as members of a minority group that is not well understood. Data collected from participant interviews and coded via MAXQDA 2020 resulted in three main themes: "Cultural differences," "Underrepresentation of Asians in leadership positions," and "Model minority stereotypes." The Cycle 2 action step consisted of my presentation of Asian American employees' professional and mental health challenges, sharing by Asian American leader panelists, and mentor and mentee sponsorship. Findings include navigating career advancement and maintaining personal well-being. Implications for the organization include the importance of affinity groups for Asian American employees, the need for ongoing professional development, and the desire for mental wellness support. Implications for the organization include greater commitment to ethnic employee groups for professional development and personal well-being and an inclusive working environment.
