Examining Counselor Preparedness and the Lived Experience of Professional School Counselors When Addressing Child and Adolescent Grief and Loss
Allison Mahon
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Shippensburg University
Grief and loss is a universal experience that impacts individuals in a multitude of ways and emotes various emotions while working through the grief journey. It is reported that by the age of 16, one in 20 children will experience the death of one or both of their parents (Parsons, 2011). School counselors working with grieving students have the opportunity to provide support to facilitate the grieving process and enable students to embrace the emotions that accompany their grief. The purpose of this qualitive study was to explore current school counselor's personal experience with loss and the impact that has had in their work with grieving students. This study also focused on the graduate training these participants received specifically related to grief and loss and how that has impacted their level of understanding and competency when supporting grieving students. This study can add to limited existing research on counselor competency in grief and loss and serve as a tool to advocate for changes that could impact many lives. This study can serve as a way to begin conversations with graduate counseling training programs and accrediting bodies.
