Exploring the Experience and Professional Development of Latina Emerging Professionals in the Counselor Education and Supervision Field
Tiana Santisteven
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Adler University
This narrative inquiry explored the experiences of Latinas in early career counselor education and supervision positions. Four participants who graduated from CACREP counselor education and supervision programs in their first 5 years in the field as emerging professionals participated in interviews and discussed their experiences. Following the data collection phases, a series of coding was constructed to determine themes and describe the phenomenon. Six major themes emerged: navigating two worlds, finding support and creating connections, isms and microaggressions, academic preparedness and professional development, mentorship, and celebrations of empowerment. With the increasing population of Latinx in the United States, there is a need to prepare better and support counselor educators and supervision professionals in academic training and in the first years of professional work. To support this need, this study informs academic training programs and those responsible for the betterment and career development of Latinas in counselor education and supervision. The results affirmed the importance of exploring the experiences of Latinas in counselor education and supervision in order to determine the multicultural, social justice, and advocacy competencies of CACREP and professional organizations in this field. This study highlights the areas in need of further support and adjustment to best improve the experiences of these professionals, and for the betterment of the profession as a whole.
