City and Education Leaders Seek Solutions to Food Scarcity and Capacity in an Urban District Area in a Mid-Atlantic State to Increase Student Achievement

Many households in America struggled to find healthy nutritious food options for their family within their local community. Families went hungry and needed access to food. The USDA reported in 2017 that nearly 41 million Americans faced hunger including 13 million children. This study identified solutions used by city and educational leaders in an Urban District Area in a Mid-Atlantic State. Food scarcity occurred in this urban area due to a limited number of full-service grocery stores or markets in their local community. Many residents in this Urban District Area in a Mid-Atlantic State had limited transportation to travel beyond their community to obtain groceries for their family which resulted in food insecurity. Food insecurities developed because residents were not able to secure nutritious healthy food in their local community. This study identified solutions used to decrease food insecurity in an Urban District in a Mid-Atlantic State. The researcher shared viable solutions that city and educational leaders developed to decrease food scarcity by providing healthy food options within their local communities to improve the well-being of community members. These viable solutions developed by city and educational leaders increased student achievement by providing students with healthy food to fuel their bodies, so students were available for learning. The researcher identified how city and educational leaders partnered with various organizations to provide free meals to students. City and Educational Leaders created equitable practices that reduced the stigma associated with receiving free or reduced meals. The researcher identified city and educational leader best practices to make households and students food secure in this Urban District Area in a Mid-Atlantic State. The researcher employed data from ERS/USDA with permission, and an Urban District Area in a Mid-Atlantic State that identified areas of local food scarcity and solutions to reduce food insecurity. The findings suggested that underrepresented communities of color with incomes below the poverty line regularly experienced food insecurity. City and educational leaders employed solutions to decrease food scarcity in an Urban District Area in a Mid-Atlantic State.
