Increasing Latinx Student Enrollment in California Community Colleges through Parent Guidance
Efren Rangel
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Long Beach
California Community College campuses are struggling to enroll Latinx students. As identified through the literature, most Latinx students navigate the college enrollment process with little to no guidance and seek support in navigating it. Using Yosso's (2005) community cultural wealth framework, I investigate how Rose Grace College's Familias Insiradoras parent outreach program educates parents to guide their children to and through college enrollment. Using a basic qualitative interview methodology, 16 parents were interviewed to give Latinx parents a voice and learn what outreach practices the Familias Inspiradoras program offers to educate and prepare parents to guide their children toward a college education. I identified six themes from the findings: aspirational, navigational, resistance, familial social and linguistic capital. I performed an in-depth analysis and found that five themes interconnected to the overarching theme of aspirational capital. Aspirational capital was found to be the driving force that strengthens the five other forms of capital. Recommendations include establishing a parent outreach program within community colleges. The parent outreach program would educate parents about students' high school to college transition and help educators guide their students toward a college education. My study also recommends that California legislators identify state and federal legislation, regulations, and policies that disguise equity work with equality within California community colleges and amend or overturn inequitable laws.
