Hillary Lin Santoso
ProQuest LLC, D.Mus.A. Dissertation, University of Michigan
Two dissertation recitals and a piano pedagogy workshop were given in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctoral of Musical Arts in Piano Pedagogy and Performance at the University of Michigan. The first dissertation lecture recital, "Afro-Cuban and Brazilian Dances," was presented in McIntosh Theatre on Wednesday, November 30, 2022. The program included "Six Afro-Cuban Dances" and "Mazurka Glissando" by Ernesto Lecuona; "Eponina Waltz," "Julietta Waltz," "Tango Habanera," and "Odeon" by Ernesto Nazareth. The presentation highlighted musical and historical Afro-Cuban and Brazilian influences within the pieces. The second dissertation solo recital was given in McIntosh Theatre on Tuesday, April 18, 2023. This recital was intended to feature a range of compositions that touch on the theme of grief and nostalgia, with elements of improvisation. The program consisted of Sonata in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2 by Ludwig van Beethoven; and Sonata in A minor, K. 310 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; Transcendental Etude No. 9 in A-flat major, "Ricordanza" by Franz Liszt; "Maple Leaf Rag" by Scott Joplin; a transcription of "When I Fall in Love" by Bill Evans; and a transcription of "Over the Rainbow" by Oscar Peterson. The pedagogy workshop, "Building an Online Piano Studio," was presented on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 in Watkins Lecture Hall. This workshop showcases an overview of advantages, disadvantages, experiences, and tools that may be applied to navigating teaching piano virtually. This workshop featured interviews with a range of piano pedagogues: from piano teachers who solely teach online, to pre-college piano professors, or collegiate piano professors.
