Exploring the Relationship between Mental Toughness and Empathy in College Students

ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Union University
Mental health struggles in college students have been steadily increasing in recent years. In an effort to slow the trend, scholars have searched for methods and tools to help students manage their mental health. One such tool that has shown to be correlated with less stress, anxiety, and symptoms associated with depression is mental toughness. Mental toughness scholarship originated in athletics but has been gaining momentum in educational research over the last decade. This study explores the relationship between mental toughness and empathy in college students. It investigates if mental toughness and empathy scores are correlated. Additionally, it explores whether mental toughness and empathy scores differ based on gender, year in school, GPA, and athletic involvement. The study was conducted at a small, private university in California. The sample consisted of 227 undergraduate college students. Each participant completed a survey to collect demographic information and obtain a score for both mental toughness and empathy. Mental toughness was measured using the Mental Toughness Questionnaire (MTQ-18), and empathy was measured using the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ). The results showed no linear relationship between mental toughness and empathy. Secondly, male students had higher mental toughness scores than females, and female students scored higher in empathy than males. Thirdly, freshmen had the lowest empathy scores, and upperclassmen had higher mental toughness scores than underclassmen. Additionally, students in the highest GPA category had the highest mental toughness. Finally, there was no significant difference in mental toughness or empathy based on whether or not a student was involved in athletics.
