Senior Student Affairs Officers' Nonacademic Decision-Making amidst a Pandemic at U.S. Catholic Colleges and Universities: A Qualitative Study
Michael P. Connolly
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, College of Saint Mary
This study aimed to investigate and describe the nonacademic decision-making experiences impacting U.S. Catholic college or university senior student affairs officers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 virus affected all institutions of higher education, and while most campuses had crisis response plans to guide decision-making, most institutions did not have decision-making guidelines to address a sustained pandemic. By examining the various factors that influenced nonacademic decision-making and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, this research study provided valuable insights regarding interdisciplinary decision-making and future crisis management considerations for the student affairs profession. With most institutions lacking specific guidelines to address a prolonged crisis, such as a pandemic, understanding these decision-making factors is crucial in developing effective campus crisis management plans for the future. By integrating the lessons learned from this unprecedented situation, Colleges and Universities may better prepare themselves to navigate similar crises in the future. This research study provides recommendations to enhance decision-making processes and improve overall campus response during times of crisis. By doing so, it will contribute to a more resilient and adaptable higher education system that can effectively address any unforeseen challenges that may arise.
